Caroline Murphy was born in the Caribbean during a hurricane, a dire sign of bad luck. Naturally, everyone believed her to be cursed. She's relentlessly bullied at school, abandoned by her mother, and worst yet, constantly haunted by the spirit of an unknown woman. This is a story of grief, love, family, queer crushes, and friendship. Hurricane Child is a middle-grade novel which we, even as adults, found to be complex, both in the plot and the issues of bullying and homophobia. Although this book made us cry, it had a lovely, poetic, magical sense of realism.
