Leading transgender rights activist Janet Mock tells her own story in Redefining Realness. Be prepared: this is a beautifully written book but it is definitely not a happy-go-lucky read. We found it to be heart-wrenching and it had us in tears. Note that this one includes sexual and verbal abuse of a child, domestic violence, bullying, homophobia, and transphobia. Mock writes about these really ugly, difficult things with poise and grace. Reading her words felt like a gift.
